That's right - after 13 miles I just missed a best time-- but it doesn't matter because it was a great run under perfect conditions in some amazing farmland. But mostly it's final prep for next week's Chicagoland Marathon! I'm running it for Endure to Cure and I'd be grateful if you visited enduretocure.org and donated what you could to my efforts to raise $2,011 in 2011.

Thanks.

Do the Hustle: a recap

As you probably know right now, yesterday was my first "event" of the 2011 race season... I "ran" up 94 floors to Hustle Up the Hancock for my favorite charity: Endure to Cure.  I've been training these last two months by hitting the stairs for about 20 minutes twice a week. In those cases, I was typically only doing about 60 floors...

I was nervous at the beginning, excited when I got started and a little emotional when I came across this little guy on the 70th floor. He was doing the full climb-- and he was no more than 8 years old. EIGHT YEARS OLD. SIX YEARS OLD, the *youngest climber* in the entire race. Abel is a boy that has the strength enough to take on the challenge to race a crazy race.  He inspired me with his courage and happiness (look at that grin on his face) and willingness to get out there and do it.

If you're one of the people that thinks you can't do it - you can. If you think it's crazy - it's not. If you're scared - consider the finish line... I did and I'm so glad I did it.

Hustling Up the Hancock

Today I'm racing up 94 flights of stairs. Maybe nuts, but I've trained and I've got two good legs so it's the least I can do. I'll let you know how things end up after. But right now, a few nerves. Whew!

Destruction on the Lake Shore Path

(download)

During my final run of 2010, the warm weather was good enough for me to try the path again. With the snow & ice melted, I was shocked to see just how bad the past few weeks of wind & lake-effect snow had had on the pavement. Whole swaths of path were pulverized and moved -- in some cases piled in neat little piles.

All I could think of was that if this happens every winter and the city fixes the path every spring -- wow - that's a lot of work.

Happy New Year.
